Instructional Strategy

Preinstructional Activities:

Motivation:  Learners will watch the introduction video on the tutorial website http://www.edui6210final.yolasite.com.  This video will highlight the advantages of building the classroom website using Yola.

Objectives:  The tutorial website will serve as an example of the final product that is achievable with Yola.  The objectives for each step will be included in the appropriate module.

Student Groupings and Media Selections:  This tutorial is designed to be done on an individual setting.  Learners will need access to a computer with an internet connection, as well as an updated flash player and speakers or headphones.

Assessment:

Pretest:  There is no pretest

Practice tests:  Learners will be able to see the outcome of their work as they progress through the module.  Learners will also have access to a checklist that will help them keep track of the steps they have completed.

Posttest:  There is no posttest, however learners will be able to immediately and frequently use the knowledge they have gained to maintain their website.

Student Groupings and Media Selections:  This tutorial will be completed on an individual basis.  Learners will need to have access to a computer with internet access as well as an updated flash player, as well as speakers or headphones.

Follow-Through Activities:

Memory Aid:  Learners will have access to a checklist in order to help them keep track of previous modules as well as prepare for what will come next.  Learners will also aid their memory by observing the immediate results as they complete each module.

Transfer:  After completing the tutorial, learners will be able to create a new website, while maintaining the one created during the tutorial.

Content Presentation:

Content:  Creating an account with Yola.  This will be accomplished by encouraging the learner to visit Yola.com and use the “Get Started Now” button to complete the account creation form, as well as create their first webpage.

Examples:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial to complete the online account creation form.  This will be accomplished by visiting the website www.yola.com and use the “Get Started Now” button to launch the account creation form.  Users will successfully fill out this form to create their account, as well as create their first webpage.

Objectives #2 – Add text boxes, save, preview, and publish work

Content Presentation:

Content:  Learners will be able to add text boxes to the page, move them around on the screen, save, preview, and publish their work.

Examples:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial in order to understand where to find “widgets” as well as how to drag a new text box onto the screen.  Learners will also find the location of the save button, the preview button, and the publish button.

Student Participation:

Practice Items and Activities:  Learners will follow the example of the tutorial in module 2 to add a new text box, move the text box, save, preview, and publish their work.

Feedback:  Learners will receive feedback by seeing the new text box on their screen.  Learners will also receive feedback by seeing the red unpublished button change to a green published button to signify that the publishing step has been completed.

Objectives #3 – Enter and edit text

Content Presentation:

Content:  Learners will be able to add text into the text boxes on the screen; learners will also be able to edit the text with common text editing features.

Examples:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial to add text into the text box by clicking into the box and typing.  Learners will then be able to highlight the text and use the editing features to change the size, color, and style of the text.

Student Participation:

Practice Items and Activities:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial in module 3 to enter text into the text box and use the editing feature to edit this text.

Feedback:  Learners will receive feedback by seeing the text appear in the correct box. Learners will also receive feedback by seeing how the text changes when using the editing feature.

Objectives #4 – Add new pages and edit the navigation menu

Content Presentation:

Content:  Learners will be able to add new pages (both in navigation and out of navigation) and use the navigation menu to change the name of pages and reorder the navigation buttons.

Examples:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial to learn how to use the add page button (found under the page menu).  Learners will also understand how to access and edit the navigation menu.

Student Participation:

Practice Items and Activities:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial in module 4 to add new pages by opening the page menu and click “add new page”.  Learners will then follow the tutorial to access the navigation menu and change the name and order of navigation buttons.

Feedback:  Learners will receive feedback by seeing a new page be created after completing the “add new page” step.  Learners will also receive feedback by seeing the name of Page 2 change to Home Work as well as the navigation order change.

Objectives #5 – Adding Hyperlinks

Content Presentation:

Content:  Learners will be able to add hyperlinks through copy and paste as well as the link menu.

Examples:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial to copy and paste the Google URL into a text box, as well as type Google into a text box and use the link menu to create an external link.  Finally, learners will be able to add an internal link to the hidden extra credit page.

Student Participation:

Practice Items and Activities:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial in module 5 to add hyperlinks by copying and pasting the URL.  Learners will also use the link menu to create both external as well as internal links.

Feedback:  Learners will receive feedback by using the preview feature to ensure that the links work.

Objectives #6 – Adding pictures

Content Presentation:

Content:  Learners will be able to add pictures to individual picture boxes as well as be able to upload multiple pictures for later use.

Examples:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial to click on a picture box and browse for a photo to upload.  Learners will also learn how to access the file manager and browse for multiple pictures to upload.

Student Groupings and Media Selections:  This tutorial will be completed on an individual basis.  Learners will need access to a computer with internet access; they will also need an updated flash player and speakers or headphones.

Student Participation:

Practice Items and Activities:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial in module 6 to click on a picture box and browse for pictures to upload.  Learners will also follow the tutorial to open the file manager and upload multiple pictures.

Feedback:  Learners will receive feedback by seeing the picture they upload be displayed in the picture box.  Learners will also receive feedback by seeing the pictures they upload in the file manager.

Objectives #7 – Adding YouTube videos

Content Presentation:

Content:  Learners will be able to find and add YouTube videos to their site.

Examples:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial to learn how to find YouTube videos, copy the URL, and add a YouTube widget to their website.

Student Groupings and Media Selections:  This tutorial will be completed on an individual basis.  Learners will need access to a computer with internet access; they will also need an updated flash player and speakers or headphones.

Objectives #8 – Adding Google Calendar

Content Presentation:

Content:  Learners will be able to add their Google Calendar to their site.

Examples:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial to learn how to access their Google calendar settings and copy the embed code.  Learners will also learn how to add a Google gadget to their site and link their calendar to it.

Student Groupings and Media Selections:  This tutorial will be completed on an individual basis.  Learners will need access to a computer with internet access; they will also need an updated flash player and speakers or headphones.

Student Participation:

Practice Items and Activities:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial in module 8 to access their Google calendar settings.  Learners will copy the embed code from the setting s menu.  Learners will learn how to add a Google gadget to their site and link their calendar to it.

Content:  Learners will be able to add a download widget to their site and browse for the correct file to be linked to it.

Examples:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial to add a download widget to their site and browse for the correct file.

Practice Items and Activities:  Learners will follow the step by step tutorial in module 9 to drag and drop a download button onto the screen.  Learners will then be able to browse for the correct file to upload.

Feedback:  Learners will receive feedback by seeing their file be uploaded and ready for download.
